Governor Bill Haslam’s extraordinarily high approval rating in Tennessee, 68 percent according to a Vanderbilt poll, makes him a politician to watch in future national elections, according to John Geer, Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of Political Science and co-director of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions at Vanderbilt.

In addition to his high approval rating, higher even than that of New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie, Haslam has impressive bipartisan support, winning the approval of 60 percent of Democratic voters.

“Overall, these are the kind of numbers that are likely to draw the attention of Republicans and Democrats nationally as discussion heats up about the 2016 presidential election,” Geer said.

Haslam’s name has not often come in discussions of national elections, unlike those of fellow moderate Republican governors Christie and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana.
